A History of The North House

  • The Original Site

    1678
The North House property site has enjoyed a long, successful history as a cherished social landmark since colonial times. The area around The North House was originally settled by an English immigrant, John North and his family in the late 1600’s. The original tract of land, upon which The North House is located, was given to John’s son,Thomas, for his services fighting with the British Colonial Army during King Phillip’s War. Historical records describe the property as being “on the east side of the Farmington River and, under the mountain and north of the Hartford-Albany Turnpike” . Thomas North and his family settled this tract in 1678.
  • Our Namesake

    1757
It is the home, of Thomas’s son, Nathaniel, built in 1757 which is now part of The North House and named in his honor. Parts of this home, became the Foyer, Lobby, and Private Dining Room of the original Old Farms Inn. Over time, the second floor bedrooms were available for travelers over-nighting at the inn.

  • The Forge

    1832
Nathaniel’s grandson inherited the property in 1832 and erected a” fine stone building” that became his Blacksmith Shop. Nathaniel’s ‘Forge’ is still operational today and is a focal point of the building. For over a century,The Avon Old Farms Inn operated as either an inn, tavern, or as a popular restaurant. The Avon Old Farms Inn became a destination in itself - for its Sunday Brunch.
  • The Belle Ballroom

    1992
In 1992, Avon Old Farms underwent a major addition and renovation. The ‘Belle Ballroom’ was added onto the property to accommodate larger private functions. The updated expansion included the ballroom, grand foyer, cocktail lounge ,bridal suite, terrace, office space, banquet kitchens, and additional parking. The ballroom was named to honour long time owner, Belle Young.
